Arizona no le gustan autores de colores: Tucson’s ban on ethnic studies

An Arizona governing body, yet again, pisses off a bunch of people.

This time, the Governing Board of the Tucson Unified School District bowed down to pressure from activist Michael Hicks and the Tea Party and banned its celebrated Mexican American Studies program in Tucson high schools.

They are starting by removing the books of celebrated authors which include Junot Díaz, Sherman Alexie, and . . .William Shakespeare?

Yes, because The Tempest has been frequently examined by postcolonial theorists. But still, when many schools in the district are 60 percent Latino, it seems disheartening to remove perhaps what may be the only exposure many of these kids have to thinkers and artists who look like them, have their experiences, their culture.

It’s not merely “politically correct” to have this multicultural curriculuum. It reflects the real America, in which soon, white people will be one of many minorities. Surely, the brown kids like me deserve to know they are not alone, that they can succeed, that they matter.
